Marriages for Many

A man named Webster lived in a town of twenty-five thousand people in the state of Wisconsin. He was a fairly prosperous manufacturer of washing machines and had a wife named Mary and a daughter named Jane. Webster was a rather quiet man, inclined to have dreams which he tried to crush out of himself in order to function effectively as a washing machine manufacturer.

As Webster drew near to his fortieth year, his daughter had just graduated from the town high school. It was early fall, and he seemed to be going along and living his life as usual, when something unexpected happened to him. Down within his body, he began to feel the stirrings of something akin to an illness. It was a difficult sensation to describe, but it was as though something were being born within him. Had he been a woman, he might have suspected that he had suddenly become pregnant.

The feeling was both unfamiliar and unsettling. Webster had never experienced anything quite like it before. It was as though a new and foreign presence had taken up residence in his body, demanding his attention and causing him to question the very foundations of his existence. He found himself inexplicably drawn inward, his thoughts becoming increasingly preoccupied with this newfound sensation.
